Summer is here and travel is ramped up a notch! Here are a few things I was reminded of during my last weekend away.
Get TSA Precheck!
Hold on… here is something new I learned. If the TSA PreCheck line is not open (because you have an early flight) just go through the regular line and tell all the TSA workers you have PreCheck! They will treat you with all the same rules as if you were in a separate line.
If nothing else but to keep your shoes on! I hate walking around barefoot and always plan to wear socks if I don’t go through TSA PreCheck!
And for those early flights… Find out when the security check point opens. There may be one close by that opens earlier with shorter lines or no waiting.
Travel light!
If I have learned anything from museums it is a study in how travel has changed yet stayed the same over the decades and centuries. Steamer trunks, luggage sets (of 10 in graduated sizes ending with the train case that doubled as the makeup bag), and straight up wearing layers to save in hand luggage. Please, when traveling on a full flight, pack light! Don’t bring the laptop if you don’t think you will need it. Get real with yourself and leave it at home. If you need to answer that emergency email, most of the time it can be done on your smart phone. Pack just what is absolutely needed for clothing and use hotel cosmetic amenities as you are able.
If you have everything you need in carry on luggage, there is no extra waiting at the other end. However it is nice to check your luggage and walk on the plane with one small bag that fits under the seat.
If you just can’t check it, another option is to Volunteer to check you larger luggage at the gate for no charge instead of checking the bag and paying the fee at the check-counter.
Shopping anyone?
That bag that fits under the seat, don’t fill it full, it may need to be your shopping bag. Everyone enjoys the yummy snack purchased at the airport and savored on the plane. But no one like the extra bag to carry. A large tote is just the thing to snuggle your yum-yum into a safe place until you can enjoy on the flight.
One item that MUST be packed!
If you don’t remember anything else from this post, the most important item to pack and requires no extra luggage is a good attitude and a sense of adventure. Whatever comes your way during the public transportation part of the trip can be enjoyable with these two items on hand.
Happy Trails! Enjoy your summer travel.
Great tip tips!
