Travel insurance is a tricky thing. It is a very good idea when traveling to get travel insurance in case of unexpected changes. I have used trip insurance to cover the cost of a hotel room when my plane was delayed a day. Insurance can also cover meals. However, always read the coverage carefully.
Trip insurance can reimburse a portion of the cost of a trip if plans change suddenly due to a covered incident such as illness or a death in the family.
Currently the most important reason to get travel insurance is for medical in case of illness while traveling and hospitalization is required or a doctor visit. One trip we had a doctor make a “house call” to the hotel after hours. Many times your current medical insurance covers this type of event but sometimes it doesn’t. In those cases travel insurance may cover the illness. Always read the coverage items.
For our trips, travel insurance is offered by the wholesaler. Additionally, if you pay with a credit card, sometimes the credit card companies offer travel insurance when their card is used to purchase the trip. It is often a good idea to research your options. Take advantage of all the benefits for the card holder.
Our trip prices are all “cash” or check prices. A small service charge is added if using a credit card. However, even with the additional fee to use the credit card it might still be less expensive / better benefit to pay the service charge and use a credit card that provides insurance.
I have read on several country sites concerning visitors or tourists with regard to travel insurance. Some countries will require proof of medical insurance to enter the country because of COVID. In addition, some countries are also requiring proof of vaccination or a rapid COVID test at the time of entry.
Whatever you decide, please be sure to read the fine print and the coverage options.
