Thinking about the New Year in Jerusalem trip, planning and organizing all while the world is in flux with ever changing rules and regulations brings many emotions to the surface. While I lie awake at night with anticipation, excitement, maybe a little concern, I wonder, “Did Mary and Joseph feel this way on their journey to Bethlehem? Anticipating meeting Jesus face to face? Wondering what life would bring them with this baby, the son of God?” I write all my plans, questions and concerns in a journal.
Traveling with your Journal
Traveling is different for us than in Biblical times, no donkeys or walking for days. We rely on planes and motor coaches. However, the anticipation and excitement is still palpable. We WILL meet Jesus in Bethlehem and New Year in Jerusalem as well as each stop along our pilgrimage. And our lives will be changed forever. I record all my thoughts, hopes and prayers in a journal.
Visit Bethlehem
The little town of Bethlehem is an interesting town with its bustling city center and surrounding fields. We have the privilege of sharing a meal with local Christians and learn about the Little Town of Bethlehem in the 21st Century! I love this time to engage with local families and participate in the Sharing the Bread mission with Select to Give Foundation.
This journal travels with me and I record everything I learn, places we visit, and answers to questions I have pondered. Not only does writing in the journal keep a log of activities during the trip it helps me understand how God is speaking to me. While re-reading my own journals from past trips, I found what seems like a different person writing letters to me. I have no recollection writing, but it is written in my own handwriting. I find that it still speaks volumes to me in the present.
Journal Now!
My advice – after you have registered and shared with a friend that we will spend the New Year in Jerusalem – start your packing list – find or buy a journal! Begin writing in your journal now! Someone will ask about your trip when you return. Don’t just show pictures. Tell stories with your pictures and how God has worked in your life before, during and after your trip. Your pilgrimage begins now, and never ends.
